Luís checked the forecast before breakfast again this morning: wind, tide and swell. We surf year-round here. What changes in spring is the light, the warmer days and more messages asking whether we can surf on Tuesday. We are back in the water for a new season.
We are Yoga Surf Ocean in Santa Cruz near Lisbon, in Portugal’s Oeste region, a few minutes from the Atlantic. Luís teaches surf and I teach yoga. If you have been here before, you know how we work: small groups and teachers who watch how you paddle and how you breathe. If this is your first time, no experience is needed.
A normal morning
You arrive and Luís has already checked the forecast. We choose a spot for your level and for that day. Beginners stay where the waves suit them, and if you are more experienced, we take you where you can progress.
Some days you surf first. Other days you start with yoga for your hips, breath and shoulders, and then walk to the water more relaxed. We plan each day around you and the ocean.
The water is cold and the wind often changes the beach by lunchtime. That is part of surfing here.
Why we keep groups small
Small groups mean that Luís can see how you paddle and I can see when you hold your breath on the mat. We can change your board, slow the plan down or remind you to relax your jaw before you duck-dive. That is only possible when the group is small.
If you are very flexible but not very stable, we work on stability. If you are stiff or nervous, we slow down.
What is new for 2026
Nothing big. The same stretch of Atlantic, the same town between the better-known surf spots, and the same rule: safety and body awareness first. Luís surfed through the winter.
What changes now is the rhythm: more daylight, more visitors planning a week of surf and yoga, and locals coming back after the holidays. The school runs all year, and spring and summer are when many of you come.
Before you write to us
You do not need to be especially fit. Tell us your real level and be ready for cold water now and then. Bring a towel, water, sun cream and a warm layer. If you are not sure whether surf, yoga or both suits your trip, message us.
In Santa Cruz you will find clean beaches, a quiet town and cliff walks after the session. Surf lessons, yoga or both on the same trip.
We teach all year. If you are in the Oeste region or planning a trip, say hello.
News from the ocean
Occasionally, we will send you a new article, a guide or news from Santa Cruz. At most once a month. You can unsubscribe at any time.
